Welcome To Independent Food Retailers Association

The Independent Food Retailers Association is focused on the INDEPENDENT retailer and the issues we face in Michigan competing with the chains, compliance and creating profits. You are invited to join us if you are an owner of an independent:

  • Supermarket
  • Bakery or other specialty store
  • Convenience store
  • Pharmacy

We are over fifty INDEPENDENT retailers in the Michigan food industry who formed a non-profit association in 1972 to fight unionization; prepare for the emergence of large chains in our towns and the changing times.

These are some of the problems we have solved together over the last 40 years:

  • Created a self-funded multi-employer health plan in 1977 that even after healthcare reform, still provides higher benefit options and lower rates than the Marketplace just look at the benefits and rate tab below! You can quote your own store.
  • Succession planning service that establishes a problem-free and successful family business continuation plan
  • $3,000 ($1500 each) annually in higher education scholarships for employees or dependents
  • Legally prepared Employment Policy handbook, tailored to member policies and operation.

We could not have accomplished these things with the original 11 retailers. We have 50 now but would have greater strength and impact with more hometown retailers. Please consider the return on membership for your business. We are running an introductory membership fee so ask Tom Johnston about it.
